SKIN MEMORIES

Thomas Mailaender in collaboration with Tanneries Roux

The inaugural LVMH Métiers d'Art Résidence Artistique took place in 2016 at Tanneries Roux, France. During his six-month residency, French artist Thomas Mailaender created 30 works printed on calf leather, mixing historic photographic processes with state-of-the-art techniques.

LVMH Métiers d’Art gave me an absolutely fabulous opportunity to work with leather by drawing inspiration from an immersion into the amazing heritage and savoir-faire at Tanneries Roux.

Thomas Mailaender

Shown at prestigious venues including the Tate Modern, MoMA PS1 and FOAM Fotografiemusem, Thomas Mailaender’s output spans diverse forms of artistic expression from ceramics to photography, collages and installations. The residency at Tanneries Roux offered the artist a new world of exploration on an original medium: calf leather. In his words: "LVMH Métiers d’Art gave me an absolutely fabulous opportunity to work with leather by drawing inspiration from an immersion in the amazing heritage and savoir-faire at Tanneries Roux." Over his six months in residence, Mailender produced around thirty works of art, each one the fruit of his experimentation with sometimes forgotten photographic processes combined with a variety of pioneering modern techniques for printing and marking leather surfaces.
